The Challenge: Identifying a Hidden Water Leak on a Private Supply

The investigation began with CAT scanning technology to accurately map the water main beneath the ground. Once the pipe route had been established, our engineers utilised advanced acoustic leak detection equipment, including highly sensitive ground microphones, to listen for the distinctive sound frequencies generated by escaping water.

To further narrow down the search area, tracer gas technology was introduced. By injecting gas into the system and tracking its movement, our team was able to pinpoint the precise location of the water leak beneath a ramp on a neighbouring property. After obtaining permission from the homeowner, we carefully excavated the area to expose the pipework.

The cause of the leak was traced to an old, redundant connection that had previously supplied a now-disused outhouse. The ageing pipework was allowing water to escape beneath an extension, making the leak particularly difficult to identify through conventional methods. Our engineers cut out and capped the unused pipework before monitoring the water supply and meter activity to confirm the repair had been successful.

Following completion of the repair, we backfilled the excavation, reinstated the ramp and restored the area, leaving the site clean, safe and fully operational.

The project was completed in just two days, bringing an end to a water leak that had persisted for several months. Following the repair, all water meters stopped registering flow, providing immediate confirmation that the leak had been successfully resolved.
