- Why Aren’t My Radiators Heating Up?
If you’ve noticed your radiators aren’t warming up as they should, or perhaps only some are warm while others remain cold, you’re not alone. Many homeowners face this issue as temperatures drop. This guide will help you understand why your radiators might not get warm effectively and offer practical steps to troubleshoot and fix common radiator problems.
Several factors can affect radiator performance, ranging from trapped air to faulty parts or system-wide issues. Here are the most common reasons radiators fail to warm up:
If air becomes trapped in your radiator, it prevents hot water from circulating properly. This is often the culprit if you hear gurgling sounds or if certain areas of the radiator feel cooler than others.
How to Bleed a Radiator: Use a radiator key to release trapped air. Turn the key counterclockwise until you hear a hissing sound (this is the air escaping). When water starts to appear, close the valve. This process should allow hot water to circulate more freely.
If bleeding doesn’t solve the issue, there may be rust or sludge inside the radiator. If only one or two radiators are cold, it may be worth removing and flushing those individually. However, if multiple radiators are affected, consider arranging a power flush with a professional, which involves a thorough cleaning of your central heating system.
Ensure both the thermostatic and lockshield valves are open. Sometimes, turning them off and on again can also help reset any sticking mechanism.
Balancing radiators ensures each one receives an equal share of hot water. Adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator can help achieve this balance.
If the boiler pressure is too low, it may struggle to circulate hot water effectively, leaving your radiators cold. Check your boiler’s pressure gauge, usually found on the front of the boiler.

Annual servicing by a qualified technician can identify issues early, prolong the life of your heating system, and ensure it’s running efficiently.
Installing a filter can help prevent sludge and debris from building up in your system. Regularly cleaning or replacing this filter will help maintain optimal performance.
Older radiators may struggle to heat effectively due to wear and tear. Upgrading to more efficient models can improve heating and reduce energy costs.
Ensure your radiators are appropriately sized for each room. Underpowered radiators may struggle to heat larger spaces adequately, while oversized radiators can waste energy.
